The Baby Robins

John has a nest of robins over the eaves of his back door. The mom flies off whenever we drive in or out or leave the house. I was worried about the survival of the eggs because of the frosts we have been having and the amount of time she was off of the nest. But they hatched this morning! So as soon as I arrived here this evening, I photographed the little ones. I have never seen just hatched birds before. It's quite an experience.

The eggs as photographed last Saturday, May 16, 2009. I stood on a ladder and held the camera over the nest.

If you click the photo and go to the Flickr page for this photo, and then click "All Sizes" on top of the photo, you will clearly see the tiny bones and internal structure of these translucent babies.

  1. So that's what the hue "robin's egg blue" is like. It's a beautiful colour.

That first photo is obviously what the mother robin sees when she flies back to the nest...wide open beaks, yelling for food.

Fabulous photos, Andree. You ought to send them to National Geographic.
